Our Story

Kaleidescape was founded in 2001 with the goal of allowing customers to enjoy movies at the highest available quality, in any room in the home, at the touch of a button. At that time, this concept was revolutionary: the DVD format was only a few years old, and while it raised the bar for home video quality, dealing with stacks of disc cases and cumbersome disc menus left much to be desired.

To bring our vision to reality, Kaleidescape created the best solution for the age of physical media. The Kaleidescape Premiere system imported a customer’s DVDs to hard disk, making them all easily available from a beautiful, graphical onscreen interface. The system included the ability to lower the lights, close the drapes, and adjust the masking curtains on projection screens, re-creating a luxury theatrical experience in the comfort of the home.

Over the years, Kaleidescape has continued to innovate. After Blu-ray was introduced and became the dominant format for HD discs, we created our second generation of Premiere products that brought the legendary Kaleidescape convenience and ease of use to the new HD format.

From the beginning, though, Kaleidescape’s founders had envisioned the day when the Internet would be fast enough that movies could be downloaded to the home and stored on the system’s hard drives, eliminating the need for physical media without sacrificing quality. Our original vision came to fruition in 2012, when Kaleidescape launched an online movie store. Kaleidescape became the first and only service to deliver full Blu-ray quality video and audio over the Internet.

We followed up a few years later with the Kaleidescape Strato product line, our first 4K movie system. Capable of downloading and playing back full resolution 4K Ultra HD movies, with high dynamic range, Kaleidescape’s secure movie platform set the standard for watching 4K content at home, and the selection of 4K movies in our store soon surpassed what was available on 4K disc.
